Come As You Are takes a look at the great purveyor of punk for the masses - Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. We’ll be playing songs about atheism, capitalism… and Courtney Love’s lady bits - and we’ll be doing it in an intimate, acoustic setting to let the songwriting shine through.

"Come As You Are is a product of Queenstown’s musical underground. We got together and made a band – and it sounds pretty damn good too."

Wellington based local songstress Violet Hirst ponders the question as to whatever happened to the great songs of the past. Digging deep into the vaults of her parents LP collection she chooses some brilliant classics from torch singers of the past, offering her own twist on Nina Simone, Kate Bush, Jeff Buckley, Elizabeth Frazer, Bic Runga and The Bangles, Patti Smith with one or two of her own.

"Whatever happened to verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-chorus??." says Violet

Violet Hirst is an original artist who has been touring and performing at festivals around the country. She has been compared to Aldous Harding, and featured on Flying Nun and Under The Radar.

"Hirst performs original songs new and old...interwoven with the sweetest banter...while you prepare for goosebumps and chills upon listening" (UTR)

EMILY BURNS

Still Vision Emily Burns - 1.jpg

Local songstress Emily Burns has covered just about every genre of song one could imagine; from Classical, Contemporary, Broadway to Jazz.   For the past three years Emily has shuttled between LA and NZ, employed as one of Princess Cruises star performers.  Then in 2020 she found herself stranded at sea, unable to find passage back to NZ.  Thankfully, with a stroke of luck, she managed to get back into NZ.

Emily has an extraordinary catalogue of song under her belt.  Her voice is a flawless blend of Judy Garland and Whitney Houston.  If you haven't caught Emily yet, do not miss this show, as she will not be staying in Queenstown for too much longer.

"Come Away With Me" is a selection of Emily's favourite songs from Sondheim to Carol King, with some hilarious stories from her travels thrown in.

Emily will be joined by Louis Koopman (piano) and Alex Pyle (guitar).

Dom copy_edited_edited.jpg

Paul Simon's work has resonated around the world throughout the last five decades and his place in the pantheon of superlative songwriters is assured. Dominic and his band have chosen a wonderful selection of some of his finest compositions and invite you to join them as they explore them in the intimate surrounds of Arrowtowns famous Blue Door.

Hazell has roped in a retinue of highly talented players in a passionate project to pay homage to one of his long-standing idols; Paul Simon. Local music impresario Dominic Hazell has a long history of writing his own songs, and the influence that Simon has had on his own songwriting cannot be overlooked.

Dominic has yearned to do an evening of Paul Simon for a long time, as Simon represents "one of the finest examples on the art of songwriting, and because the songs are really hard".
